Scorpio
Various
Ahed, 1978

Sometimes the best breaks aren’t hiding on insanely expensive holy-grail records, but right there in the dollar bin. That’s exactly the case with this unassuming compilation 21 Guitar Hits, which I’ve had in my collection for over 20 years.
Included on it: a wonderfully crisp cover version of Dennis Coffey’s hit Scorpio. Coffey, who made Detroit funk history as guitarist of the Motown Funk Brothers and later with his solo album Evolution, released Scorpio in 1971. The track became a B-boy favorite, endlessly sampled and a must-have for generations of breakers.
Records like this remind you: it’s not always about rarity or collector’s value, but about the vibe. And here, that vibe is unbroken – whether in the dollar bin or in the B-boy and B-girl circle.
