The Mexican
Track
Som Livre, 1973

On this Brazilian compilation from the 1970s, you’ll find a great version of The Mexican, originally by the British band Babe Ruth. The song first appeared in 1972 on their debut album First Base and was written by guitarist Alan Shacklock. It was recorded at the legendary Abbey Road Studios in London.
Over the years, The Mexican became a true cult track. With its driving beat, funky bassline, and the Morricone sample from For a Few Dollars More, the song later turned into a breakdance anthem of the early hip-hop scene and appeared in countless DJ sets and samples.
On the Brazilian compilation Sua Paz Mundial – Sonzão Jovem, there is a surprisingly strong version of this classic performed by the unknown band Track. The interpretation stays quite close to the original but is almost impossible to find outside Brazil.
