When you hear “Heartbreak Hotel,” thinking of Elvis is absolutely the right instinct. The song was released in 1956 as Presley’s first single for RCA and became his first number-one hit.
Things get more interesting on Blues Full Circle, the debut album by Southern California blues singer and multi-instrumentalist Tim Williams. Released on Epic in 1969, the album consists almost entirely of blues and rock ’n’ roll classics.
His version of “Heartbreak Hotel” clocks in at just under one minute and forty seconds and injects a healthy dose of raw blues into the rock ’n’ roll anthem.
Elvis delivered the hit, Tim Williams brought the song back to the blues.
