Song For My Father

The Don Carrington Trio

Patagon, 1969

Song For My FatherThe Don Carrington Trio
00:00 / 03:34

In the late 1960s, the Don Carrington Trio recorded exactly one LP in Toronto: Makin’ It Happen. One of those records that stayed under the radar for a long time, but is now rightly considered a Canadian funk and soul jazz gem.

The trio played live regularly in Toronto and were known for a raw, direct groove somewhere between Hammond soul, funk, and jazz. One of the album’s highlights is their version of A Song for My Father, originally written by Horace Silver in 1965.

Silver dedicated the song to his father and combined hard bop with a subtle Latin feel. A jazz standard that has been interpreted countless times.

Carrington’s trio turns it into a heavy, raw, funky Hammond soul jazz version. You can hear that these are musicians shaped by live performance, who know exactly how to keep a room moving. Makin’ It Happen sadly remained the Don Carrington Trio’s only album. Today it is sought after, rare, and accordingly expensive. A Canadian funk soul holy grail.
