When I find one of my favourite Sly Stone songs on a private press record, I’m obviously curious, and I definitely wasn’t disappointed.

With the obscure band The Barons on their only album from 1974, everything sounds a bit rawer, looser, and more unpolished than on records by big bands like Sly & The Family Stone. No big studio, no major label, just a band with surprisingly great taste and a real feel for funk.

“If You Want Me To Stay” originally appeared in 1973 on the Sly & The Family Stone album Fresh and became one of the band’s last major hits.
