I’m not exactly sure what it is, but I love these records by obscure American bands that spent the 70s playing covers in hotel bars somewhere, then recorded an album to sell to the guests. They’re often not top-tier musicianship, but they make up for it with charm, character, and a lot of heart.

The Headliners is exactly that kind of record. Packed with covers ranging from Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama” and Sly & The Family Stone’s “If You Want Me to Stay” to this cool version of Bill Withers’ “Use Me.”

“Use Me” was originally released by Bill Withers in 1972 on Still Bill and became one of the great soul classics of the decade thanks to its distinctive bass line and dry groove.

The Headliners don’t radically reinvent the song. Instead, they deliver a surprisingly solid, slightly rockier version, complete with a cool electric piano and exactly that rough-edged bar-band charm that makes so many of these obscure cover LPs so appealing.
