Spooky
Som Três
Odeon, 1970

Som Três were one of the first Brazilian bands whose records entered my collection in the 1990s. I always loved the groove of this Brazilian jazz trio.
The group was founded in the 1960s by pianist César Camargo Mariano and blended jazz with samba and bossa elements. The trio was completed by Sabá on bass and Toninho Pinheiro on drums. They originally played as the backing band for Wilson Simonal before developing into one of the most exciting instrumental groups in the Brazilian scene with their own albums.
On the 1970 album Um É Pouco, Dois É Bom, Êste Som Três É Demais, they cover Spooky. The song was originally an instrumental by Mike Sharpe and was later given lyrics and covered many times, including by Dusty Springfield.
Som Três’ version is quite uptempo and therefore works perfectly on the dancefloor.
