Dollar Bin Heat: Shirley Bassey’s Something, released in 1970, is exactly the kind of record you can still pick up for next to nothing at a thrift store or flea market, yet musically it offers far more than its modest price might suggest.

On the album, Bassey takes on several contemporary pop and rock classics, including songs by the Beatles, Blood, Sweat & Tears, and, of course, The Doors. The entire album was arranged by the legendary Johnny Harris, and you can hear it.

For me, «Light My Fire» is the highlight. Quiet, almost weightless passages alternate with lush strings and dramatic orchestral moments, while Bassey’s voice soars above it all. At times, it almost hints at her later James Bond theme «Diamonds Are Forever», released just one year later in 1971.

For so little money, you rarely get a cover version this beautifully arranged. Dollar Bin Heat at its finest.
