For the Bollywood soundtrack Baadal, Bappi Lahiri and Sharon Prabhakar recorded the seven-minute epic «Mere Jaisi Mehbooba» in 1984. The track borrows so unmistakably from Herbie Hancock’s «Rockit» that it can hardly be described as mere inspiration. Strangely enough, Herbie Hancock is not credited anywhere.

«Rockit» was far more than just a successful electro-funk track. Grandmixer D.ST’s scratching brought the turntable into the spotlight as a musical instrument and introduced turntablism to a global mainstream audience. 

The record became an important bridge between the emerging hip-hop culture and the pop world.

But Bappi Lahiri doesn’t stop with Herbie Hancock. At 2:13, the intro from Tyrone Brunson’s «The Smurf» suddenly appears out of nowhere. 

Then, at 4:49, you hear the very passage that Prodigy of Mobb Deep sampled for «Cold World» in 2008.
