Satu Pentikäinen’s 1982 album Lapsuus Jäi is a great example of how international pop hits were routinely re-recorded for the Finnish market back in the day. Alongside versions of Kim Wilde’s «Cambodia», Lionel Richie’s «Endless Love», and Bucks Fizz’s «The Land of Make Believe», the album also features Diana Ross’ «I’m Coming Out».

Originally released in 1980, «I’m Coming Out» was written and produced by Chic’s Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards, giving it that unmistakable funky disco groove.

Satu’s version, «Niin Hyvä On», stays remarkably close to Diana Ross’ original. The biggest difference, of course, is the Finnish vocals. And where the original features that famous trombone solo, Satu’s version replaces it with a synthesizer solo.

It’s exactly these little twists that make international cover versions like this so much fun to discover.
