Rosinha de Valença is widely regarded as one of the greatest Brazilian guitarists of the 20th century. For Ipanema Beat, she travelled to Johannesburg, where she recorded an album with a four piece band that blends Brazilian influences with soul, funk, and jazz. Alongside original compositions, the album features interpretations of international classics such as «A Whiter Shade of Pale», «Sunshine Superman», and «Mercy, Mercy, Mercy».

«Mercy, Mercy, Mercy» was written in 1966 by Austrian keyboardist Joe Zawinul and became a worldwide hit through the Cannonball Adderley Quintet. The soulful jazz tune quickly became a standard and has since been covered by countless artists.

Rosinha de Valença takes the song in a different direction. Her version is less jazz oriented than the original, replacing its laid back feel with a driving mix of funk and groove. Duncan Mackay's Hammond organ lays down a powerful foundation, while Rosinha's electric guitar delivers memorable melodies and expressive solos.
