In the late ’70s, the disco band Punto Quatro emerged in Guadalajara, Mexico. With lead singer Debora “Debbie” Serrata, the group soon moved to the U.S. (Oxnard, California) and in 1978 released an album that still brings a smile today: the complete soundtrack of Grease – in Spanish.

You’re The One That I Want became Te escogí para mí, Hopelessly Devoted to You was Desesperadamente enamorada de ti, and the title track Grease turned into the wonderfully literal Grasa. Musically, the band blended disco with a touch of Latin pop – charmingly cheesy, but danceable.

The album cover is at least as legendary as the music: Debora Serrata and her male counterpart Ramiro Guzmán posing as Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta – a Mexican homage to Hollywood glamour.

Although the big breakthrough never came, today Punto Quatro are seen as a cult phenomenon among disco and soundtrack collectors. Their recordings are a colorful reminder of how far the Grease and disco wave spread – all the way to Mexico, with Spanish lyrics and their own Latin disco groove.
