Give It Up Or Turn It Aloose
Philip Catherine
Warner Brothers Records, 1972

His grandfather was the first violinist of the London Symphony Orchestra. And when Philip Catherine first heard the French chansonnier Georges Brassens, one thing became clear to him: he wanted to be a guitarist.
The Belgian jazz guitarist quickly became a staple of the European scene, performing with legends such as Chet Baker, Kenny Drew, Dexter Gordon, Alphonse Mouzon, Billy Brooks, and Charles Mingus.
A true highlight of his discography is the 1972 album Stream. Featured on it is the legendary Belgian pianist Marc Moulin, whose band Placebo has long held cult status among rare groove and jazz-funk collectors worldwide. When Moulin is involved, one thing is certain: it’s going to be good. And unfortunately also: it’s going to be expensive.
Stream includes an outstanding version of James Brown’s Give It Up or Turnit a Loose — a Belgian funky homage to the Godfather of Soul’s sound. Pure crate-digger DJ gold!
