The Orquesta Cubana de Música Moderna was founded in 1967 and brought together some of Cuba's finest jazz and popular musicians. The state sponsored ensemble blended Afro Cuban rhythms with jazz, funk, and international pop hits. On Directo Desde Cuba, released in 1972, the orchestra takes on Gershon Kingsley's instrumental classic «Popcorn».

Originally released in 1969, «Popcorn» is widely regarded as one of the first major synthesizer hits in music history. Its catchy melody inspired countless cover versions and turned the tune into a true electronic pop classic.

The Cuban interpretation, however, shares little with the minimalist original beyond its melody. After a rather laid back intro, the track bursts into life after about a minute. Driving drums, punchy horns, a huge bass line, psychedelic guitar, and flute transform «Popcorn» into an irresistible Latin funk groove. Chances are you've never heard Gershon Kingsley's classic quite like this.
