Mistérios (Sadness Part I)
Onda Choc
Columbia, 1991

Onda Choc were a Portuguese children’s and youth group that recorded international hits with Portuguese lyrics. Their 1991 album Férias Grandes is practically a CoverLove feast from start to finish: «Na Na Na» is based on Vaya Con Dios’ «Nah Neh Nah», «Dança Só Comigo!» on Chocolate's «Ritmo de la Noche», «Balada de Little Joe» on Hank Williams’ «Jambalaya», and even «O Mosquito» traces its way through Joe Dassin’s «Le Moustique» back to The Doors’ «The Mosquito».
But the strangest of them all is «Mistérios», their version of Enigma’s «Sadeness (Part I)». Enigma, the German music project founded by Romanian-German producer Michael Cretu, scored a worldwide hit with the song in 1990. Gregorian chants, a slow dance beat, and Sandra’s whispered French vocals created a highly unusual blend of new age, pop, and dance.
Onda Choc stay surprisingly close to the original. The mysterious beat and atmosphere are instantly recognisable, only this time children’s voices take over the distinctive Gregorian chants. A mysterious new age and dance worldwide hit with Gregorian chants, reinterpreted by a Portuguese children’s group.
It doesn’t get much more CoverLove than this.
