It’s almost cheeky, really.

A musician puts one of the most famous jazz standards of all time on his only known LP and is already done after just one minute and fifty seconds.

On The Brand New Me you'll find a version of “Take Five,” the piece Paul Desmond wrote for the Dave Brubeck Quartet and which first appeared in 1959 on the legendary album Time Out. A tune in the unusual 5/4 time signature that almost every jazz fan recognises instantly.

Oladepo Ogomodede, the saxophonist and flautist released The Brand New Me as his only known LP. Apparently, he emigrated from Africa to the United States, worked as a session musician, performed under various stage names, and later even toured shopping malls in Florida as a one-man band.

Ogomodede doesn’t even try to reinvent the wheel. His version stays surprisingly close to the original. And maybe that’s exactly where its strength lies. The melody feels a touch more melancholic, the mood a bit more floating and almost modal. Everything sounds light, elegant, and effortless.

And then, after less than two minutes, it’s already over again.

Just a beautiful little version of a great classic that immediately makes you want to play it one more time.
