Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay
Novella Nelson
Arcana, unknown

Novella Nelson was born in 1939 in Brooklyn, New York. Her father, James, was a pastor and taxi driver; her mother, Evelyn, worked in the fashion industry. That mix of groundedness and style also shaped her artistic path.
In 1970, she released her self-titled album Novella Nelson on the small label Arcana Records. The record blends soul, jazz, and folk, showcasing Nelson’s versatility as a singer, actress, and activist. One of the highlights for me is her version of the Otis Redding classic (Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay.
Her interpretation feels calm and focused, carried by emotion and depth.
Novella Nelson passed away in 2017 in her hometown of New York. She left behind an artistic legacy that bridges theatre, film, and music – and shows just how powerful quiet soul music can be.
