If You Want Me To Stay

Johnny Houston

Passion, 1973

If You Want Me To StayJohnny Houston
00:00 / 03:49

The only album by saxophonist Johnny Houston – and also the sole release on the tiny label Passion Records.

Born in Richmond, Virginia, and partly raised in Philadelphia, Houston was performing on stage by the age of 15 and, according to the liner notes, played with greats like Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Gladys Knight & The Pips, James Brown, Herbie Mann, and the Isley Brothers.

His 1975 album Makin’ Bacon is a real hidden gem for funk and soul diggers. The highlight: his version of Sly & The Family Stone’s If You Want Me To Stay, featuring an incredible nearly one-minute drum break solo at the end of the track.

For the impatient — skip ahead to 2:48!
