George Westermeyer III and Together released their self-titled album in 1973 on Kare, a small label from Columbus, Ohio. The band played at the Sangria Lounge, a popular local spot for live music and disco that attracted a young crowd throughout the 1970s. Fittingly, the LP consists almost entirely of bar and dancefloor favourites of the day, including «Brandy», «Long Train Runnin’», «Burning Love», and Bill Withers’ «Ain’t No Sunshine».

«Ain’t No Sunshine» was released in 1971 on Bill Withers’ debut album Just As I Am and became one of his best-known songs.

In the hands of George Westermeyer and Together, the song takes on an intensity of its own. The chorus feels more urgent, while the melancholic guitar and organ create a wonderfully dark atmosphere. A raw, emotional take on a classic you may have heard a hundred times, yet somehow never get tired of hearing again.
