Imagine yourself in a club in Casablanca in the mid-1970s. Then Faddoul takes the stage, backed by his three-piece band Les Privilèges. Just a few notes in, and it’s clear: this guy and this sound are one of a kind.
Here comes the “Moroccan Minister of Super Heavy Heavy Funk” rocking out with raw, high-energy funk — sung in Arabic. His music carries the spirit of James Brown, whose sound Faddoul absorbed during a stay in Paris before returning to Morocco. There, he released a handful of singles that are now considered true gems among DJs and collectors.
One of these rare recordings is Sid Redad — Faddoul’s Arabic version of Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag. A garage rock-infused funk track you hear once and never forget.
