Lo Que No Haria Por Amor (What You Won’t Do For Love)
Debora
OB Productions, 1979

Débora Serrata was a Mexican singer and a former member of Punto Quatro, the group that recorded a Spanish-language version of the Grease soundtrack in 1978, which you can also find on CoverLove.
On her later solo LP Supergirl Debora, she was backed by musicians from Punto Quatro. The album moves between Latin soul and disco and is a little paradise for fans of Spanish-language cover versions.
Among the tracks are Cheryl Lynn’s «Got to Be Real», Gloria Gaynor’s «I Will Survive», Donna Summer’s «Heaven Knows», Chic’s «I Want Your Love», and Bobby Caldwell’s «What You Won’t Do for Love».
My CoverLove pick is «Lo Que No Haría Por Amor», Débora’s Spanish version of Bobby Caldwell’s «What You Won’t Do for Love».
Caldwell’s original appeared on his 1978 debut album and became his signature song. Débora keeps the laid-back soul groove but switches the lyrics to Spanish, instantly giving the song a charm of its own.
But really, the whole album is a discovery. Great Spanish-language versions of well-known disco and soul classics, fantastic sound, and exactly the kind of record DJs are after today, which also makes original copies seriously expensive.
For me, this is one of those records that has long deserved a proper reissue. It’s simply too good to remain this hard to find.
