Respect
Crazy Elephant
Major Minor, 1969

Crazy Elephant was less of a real band and more of a studio project.
On their only album, Crazy Elephant from 1969, there’s also a surprisingly cool cover version of Otis Redding’s “Respect.”
The song was originally released in 1965, before Aretha Franklin turned it into a definitive soul anthem two years later.
But here you get less soul power and a lot more garage vibe, with plenty of Hammond organ. And my favourite part kicks in at around 3:25. Suddenly everything loosens up, the flute takes over, and for a brief moment even some Latin vibes sneak in.
Very nice.
