Wie wär's mit schulfreiem Montag?
Cora und die Popspatzen
RCA, 1980

Joe Bataan’s disco-rap hit “Rap-O Clap-O” from 1979 became “Wie wär's mit schulfreiem Montag?” in Germany just one year later. The song is performed by Cora und die Popspatzen. And yes, it’s really about getting rid of Mondays.
Joe Bataan’s original is considered one of the earliest commercially successful rap and disco hits ever. Cora und die Popspatzen keep the groove and the catchy melody, but turn it into something completely their own.
Young Cora raps surprisingly cool about how great it would be not to have to go to school on Mondays. She is backed by the Popspatzen, whose charming children’s choir vocals make the chorus instantly memorable. The whole thing is wonderfully weird, somewhere between disco, children’s music, and early German rap.
And since today happens to be Monday, this single feels particularly fitting. Whether it’s school or work, it definitely makes the start of the week a little better and is guaranteed to put you in a good mood.
A Monday without school will probably remain just a dream, but this Cora single is real, and it absolutely rocks.
CoverLove at its best!
