1/3
Respect
Circulos
Unic, 1971
RespectCirculos
00:00 / 03:00

On this Spanish 7-inch single by Círculos from 1971, the B-side hides a true classic of soul history: Respect.
The song was originally written by Otis Redding, who recorded it in 1965 for his album Otis Blue / Otis Redding Sings Soul. It became world famous two years later through Aretha Franklin, whose 1967 version turned it into a soul standard and a Grammy-winning hit.
Círculos take a different approach in their version. Instead of gospel power and dominant horns, they focus on a grooving Hammond sound and a mod-soul vibe, similar to what many European club bands were playing in the early 1970s.
