I would have loved to hear him play live, but the American Hammond organist Charles Kynard passed away in July 1979—just six months after I was born.
Kynard performed exclusively in Los Angeles. By day, he worked with children with intellectual disabilities; by night, he played in various clubs, and on Sundays, he served as a church organist.
I'm a huge Kynard fan and own nearly all of his albums—including his 1972 release Woga, which features an incredibly funky instrumental version of the Aretha Franklin classic Rock Steady.
