Calvin Brooks was a jazz guitarist from Detroit, Michigan, who released his debut album A Smooth Flight in 1989 on his own label, Brooks Records. The record delivers exactly what the title promises: a smooth journey through laid-back jazz landscapes, featuring original compositions and carefully chosen cover versions.

My personal highlight: the airy, light, and pleasantly smooth take on Bill Withers’ Just the Two of Us. Relaxed, charming, and with just the right touch of cheesiness.

The album doesn’t show up often – but when it does, it’s surprisingly affordable. 

A hidden gem for smooth jazz fans and patient vinyl diggers alike.
