On his 1968 album Cal Tjader Sounds Out Burt Bacharach, the legendary vibraphonist Cal Tjader recorded a wonderful version of Walk On By, the famous song written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David for Dionne Warwick, which has been one of the great soul standards since 1964.

Tjader does not turn it into a simple jazz copy, but into a smooth Latin jazz interpretation. His vibraphone carries the melody with a dreamlike lightness, while the arrangement floats in a warm mix of Latin rhythms, jazzy harmonies, and a touch of lounge cool.

This cover might also be familiar to hip hop fans, because DJ Premier sampled Cal Tjader’s Walk On By for the Gang Starr classic Full Clip from 1999.
