New York rock band The Blues Magoos, hailing from the Bronx, released five albums between 1966 and 1970 – landing somewhere between garage rock, psychedelia, and blues rock.
On their fourth album, Never Goin’ Back to Georgia (1969), they take a noticeably earthier, more soulful turn compared to their earlier work. Alongside original tracks, the album includes a few covers – one of them a surprisingly soulful, bluesy take on Elvis Presley’s Heartbreak Hotel.
Elvis goes Bronx: less hip swing and hair grease, more gritty guitar, deep soul – and that amazing vibraphone. Just wow.
