All Along the Watchtower appeared in 1967 on Bob Dylan’s John Wesley Harding. The myth of the song was shaped shortly after by Jimi Hendrix, whose 1968 version turned it into a rock classic.
The song also appears on the self-titled album by US singer-songwriter Barbara Keith from 1973. With roots in folk and country rock, Keith recorded it with a top-level studio crew and created a brilliant cover version. A calm intro gradually builds into a psychedelic anthem.
Barbara Keith’s second and final solo album is a hidden singer-songwriter gem that received little promotion in the 1970s and was quickly withdrawn from the market. That is why it is rarely found today and usually only turns up in well-curated record collections.
