Quebra (Piece Of My Heart)
Bad Girls
Philips, 1994

Most people immediately associate Piece of My Heart with Janis Joplin. But even that legendary version was already a cover. The original came from Erma Franklin, Aretha’s sister, who first recorded the song in 1967. Janis later made it immortal, but its roots clearly lie in soul music.
The Brazilian Bad Girls take it one step further. Daniele Daumerie and Karla Sabah translated the song into Portuguese and turned it into their own Brazilian version. A fantastic take, a colorful mix of electronic, hip hop, latin, funk, soul, and pop that shows just how flexible and travel-ready great songs can be.
In fact, the entire album Bad Girls from 1994 is packed with strong cover versions. Chain of Fools, Spinning Wheel, or Gainsbourg’s Je T’aime Moi Non Plus. International classics, rethought, re-sung, and culturally shifted. That’s exactly why this record is a real CoverLove hidden gem for cover fanatics like me.
An album that proves covers are not second choice, but often the most exciting way to keep music history alive.
