Been To Canaan
Alice Babs
Swedish Society Discofil, 1973

Before everything was catalogued on Discogs, Music With A Jazz Flavour by Alice Babs & Nils Lindberg’s Orchestra was one of those classic DJ digger records: rare, expensive, and sought after because of one particular track.
The reason for its cult status: Been to Canaan. Originally a gentle song by Carole King from 1972 (Rhymes & Reasons), it is completely reimagined here. The restrained singer-songwriter piece turns into a percussive rare-groove jazz dance track, perfect for the dancefloor.
And one small detail I love: around 3:45, the track seems to end, only to slip into a surprising and brilliant outro.
These are exactly the moments that turn records like this into hidden gems.
An unassuming Swedish jazz LP with that one track that suddenly turns Carole King into dancefloor material.
